[netperf-talk] Urgent UDP_Stream question

Hello Dmitry,

A couple of points:

1. Sorry about the confusion. You've got the exact same name as someone I know, but looking at your e-mail signature, I can't imagine the person I know being in a Dutch rock band :)

2. If I understand your question correctly, you're asking why the UDP send side statistics show a high throughput while the receiver side shows low throughput?

That's because most of your packets never reached netserver in the UDP_STREAM test:

Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Messages Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
Okay Errors
112640 65507 60.00 57408 0 501.42
112640 60.00 94 0.82

57408 packets sent, only 94 packets received.

Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Messages Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
Okay Errors
112640 65507 60.00 57232 0 499.88
112640 60.00 143 1.25

57232 packets sent, only 143 packets received.

TCP on the other hand is a reliable protocol, so it'll use mechanisms like retransmits to receive all packets in an established connection.

But I'm sure someone on netperf-talk might be able to better help you root cause those than I.

Thanks

- Bhavesh

Hello Bhavesh Davda!
Maybe, but i'm not sure.

Here's some TCP outputs:
Recv Send Socket Size, bytes Send Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
 87380 16384 16384 60.10 80.95

Recv Send Socket Size, bytes Send Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
 87380 16384 16384 60.37 89.23

And here's some udp outputs for same config:

Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Messages Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
Okay Errors
112640 65507 60.00 57408 0 501.42
112640 60.00 94 0.82

Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Messages Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
Okay Errors
112640 65507 60.00 57232 0 499.88
112640 60.00 143 1.25

Netserver was ran as "netserver -4 -p 6543" on pc with dualband gigabit router.
Netperf for both UDP and TCP - as "netperf -l 60 -p 6543 -H <server ip>,4 –L <client ip>,4 -t UDP_STREAM". <server ip> - IP adress of embedded device with wifi adapter, <client ip> - IP adress of the PC with router.

Why send throughput on UDP is such high, when recieved is so low? Something with settings, or what? How you can explain that?

I'm guessing you're the Dmitry I know? :-)

What's up? Perhaps I can help with some basic questions. Please paste the entire outputs of your TCP_STREAM and UDP_STREAM tests.

Cheers

 Hello guys.

I am new to netperf and i have urgent situation.

I have a pc, connected to a netgear wndr3700 wireless dualband gigabit router with 300mb\s wifi, on which i run netserver:
netserver -4 -p 6543
And i hace a device on embedded linux with wifi on which i run netperf for udp stream test:
netperf -l 60 -p 6543 -H <server ip>,4 –L <client ip>,4 -t TCP_STREAM

As a result of such test i have following results:
Socket Size, bytes Message Size, bytes Elapsed Time, secs Messages Throughput, 10^6bits/sec
Okay Errors
112640 65507 60.00 71511 0 624.60

On TCP_stream:
 87380 16384 16384 60.03 53.79

What is the problem with UDP stream? What is going wrong?
Please give me a fast answer. This is very urgent. Thanks.
