There can be any number of reasons.  Can you more fully describe the 
test setup?

*) netperf version (both sides)
*) os used (both sides)
*) os version (etc etc...)
*) is there a firewall active?
*) are there core files left behind on the netserver side?

Also, does the problem happen if you ./configure without demo mode 
and/or do not have the -D global option present?
