Well, I found-out why my initial attempts to use the "%<index>" or "%<intf>" 
constructs were unsuccessful in actually establishing a data connection - I'd 
clipped the last nibble of the remote v6 address and so neighbor discovery 
didn't happen.  Having fixed that I can report that it is possible to use 
link-local IPv6 addresses on Linux with netperf.
