Those interested in playing with netperf4 but not following along in netperf-dev
are welcome to grab the "RC1" bits for netperf 4.0.0 from:

ftp://ftp.cup.hp.com/dist/networking/benchmarks/experimental/netperf/netperf-4.0.0rc1.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.netperf.org/netperf/experimental/netperf-4.0.0rc1.tar.gz

These bits have compiled and minimally tested on MacOS X 10.3.9,
Debian Linux 2.6.mumble on IA64 and IA32, HP-UX 11.23 IA64. While it
is a goal, they definitely will not compile under Windows.

Under OSX it may be necessary to go into the src/ directory and rename
NetPerf to NetPerf.dir and NetServer to NetServer.dir - on my home
system at least, filename comparisons were being made in a
case-insensitive manner and that confused things. The NetPerf and
NetServer directories contain nothing of interest to anything other
than a Windows compile.

Those wanting to track changes to netperf4 can watch the changes in
the subversion respository at:

http://www.netperf.org/svn/netperf4/trunk

(Note, as of this writing, I'd not tagged a branch for 4.0.0rc1,
although I should) There is also the netperf-dev at netperf.org mailing
list. Subscribers to that list receive automagic email to notify
of commits.

At present, netperf4 knows how to do tests that amount to the netperf2
TCP_STREAM, TCP_MAERTS and TCP_RR tests. It also knows about the
netperf3 DNS_RR test and what is being called the "vst" test which is
like the TCP_RR test but with multiple request/response sizes.
Configuration and such for netperf4 is _very_ different from netperf2.

happy benchmarking,

rick jones
