I'm still on the fence on doing that across the board for netperf2, but you can 
take heart that netperf4 doesn't have that problem - it is using 64-bit integers 
and as suspenders added to the belts passes ascii (XML) around

The patch appears good - I've commited it to the TOT in the repository - that 
would be revision 57.
